On Wednesday, March 25, the Library is planning to release the results of the Office of Personnel Management 2008 Employee Survey, which Library employees participated in late last year. The Library briefed its labor unions on the survey’s findings Monday morning, March 23.
The survey found that, Library-wide, employees were dissatisfied with their involvement in decisions affecting their work. The Library has tasked each Service Unit, including CRS, with developing an Action Plan that will address this problem within their own Units. The Library has asked the unions to assist in developing these plans. CREA will be approaching the Director to meet and determine how we can assist in developing the CRS plan. We will seek your input after our meeting with the Director.
A major weakness of the survey is that the results were aggregated for the Library as a whole and cannot be broken down by Service Unit (CRS, Copyright, Law Library, etc). Thus, the results in no way can be used as indicators for how staff feel about working conditions in their individual Service Units. The Library told the unions that the survey will be repeated in the fall and data will be collected by Service Unit.
We will keep you updated on the progress of this effort.
